Friday Morning Sketchbook Class - Winter Term
The Body

da Vinci sketchbook page |
January 20 - March 16, 2012
(8 weeks: no class on February 17th)
10am - 1pm
£160 fee includes instruction, hand-outs and supplementary materials* |
In this class we explore many different museums and galleries in London, from the big 'Nationals' to more off-the-beaten track collections. Past museums we visited are the British Museum, the Victoria & Albert, Pollack's Toy Museum, the Hunterian Collection and the Old Operating Theatre and Herb Garrett, among others. I am constantly searching for new places to go, so even returning students get new surprises each term. This term we will concentrate on different aspects of the body, such as body ornamentation, clothing, and even the inside of the body (i.e. medical collections). While this is not strictly a figure drawing class, I will provide some instruction on drawing the figure as is appropriate.
You are welcome to come try out this course for one week if you are interested!
*You will be required to bring a sketchbook & basic drawing kit. While most museums we go to our free, there will be a few entrance fees to pay as well. We will meet at collections all around London, so be prepared to travel a bit.

Nontraditional Materials in Drawing at Tate Modern

Let's take a break pencils and chalk and see what materials we can get away with using in the museum! Try out drawing with unusual tools like burnt sticks, and drawing in combination with found materials such as found papers and other objects to bring texture into our drawings. We'll look at ways that artists use nontraditional materials throughout Modernism. This day of drawing will focus on materials exploration and process more than observational drawing, so be open to working in new and different ways.
